MongoLloyd on The Craft: Legacy

1/10 · Apr 2, 2021

It's disappointing to say that this movie doesn’t even come close to matching the quality of the first The Craft, and it feels like a disservice to American culture from before recent social shifts. Regardless of embracing sensitivity and acceptance, this film is noticeably weaker than its predecessor in both subject matter and style, disrespecting the original's standing as an important piece of American filmmaking. The most obvious problem lies with the casting of the four main characters. The actors chosen include a person who appears to be male presenting as female, another who looks masculine, someone considered unattractive, and at least one individual who is strikingly beautiful and seemingly of African descent. It's puzzling why they would abandon the original film’s focus on portraying four uniquely attractive young women, instead opting for this combination. Was it meant to suggest that beauty goes beyond appearance? That inner beauty matters more? That everyone possesses beauty? The reality is that beauty is simply beauty, and it’s largely absent from this movie. Compounding the issues with this modern attempt to update a classic film, they've portrayed every male character as villainous. It sends a questionable message.
