William H. Macy portrays “Bernie,” who functions as a sort of casino downer—like Eeyore. He positions himself near the gamblers, attempting to spread his pessimistic outlook so they’ll lose money. It might not seem like a proven method, but "Shelley," played by Alec Baldwin, is convinced it works since their operation generated $32 million last year. This strategy is one of several that have the criminal bosses questioning whether changes are needed, making this an inopportune moment for “Bernie” to leave. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets “Natalie,” portrayed by Maria Bello, and instantly develops feelings for her, which surprises him even more when she seems to feel the same way. They quickly develop a connection, but it all feels rather too easy, doesn't it? To further complicate matters, his son "Mikey" (Shawn Hatosy) appears with his girlfriend and awkwardly tries his hand at winning big at the tables! As these different plot threads slowly come together, you’re left to wonder if any of them will actually find happiness or satisfaction. Macy is a great fit for the role, using his natural mournful expression to convincingly portray someone astonished when he finds himself with “Natalie.” However, the rest of it feels fairly standard and the story loses momentum in the second half as it becomes unclear where things are headed. The ending itself combines elements reminiscent of Buster Keaton with touches of Martin Scorsese, which I found a little silly. It’s acceptable entertainment, but Baldwin doesn't exactly project any real danger—he seems more like a meringue than a menacing figure—and ultimately, I was somewhat let down.
