I found myself enjoying The Convert for the most part, even with some issues. One thing I appreciated was Guy Pearce’s performance; he’s an Australian actor who, to my mind, does excellent work. It had been a long time since I’d seen him in something I thought was worthwhile, so seeing him in this film felt like a pleasant surprise. Another positive aspect is the story itself, which provides some understanding of life in New Zealand during its early colonial period. Specifically, it explores the tensions between Maori tribes and the new settlers. The narrative isn’t unpleasant, but as frequently happens, it pushes things too far. The colonists are shown as mostly close-minded and prejudiced; while racism certainly existed—and unfortunately still does—it's also true that there aren't any full-blooded Maori left in New Zealand because they mixed with the newcomers. It feels like a bit much to emphasize race so strongly when you think about that fact. Despite this, there’s still plenty here to enjoy. The acting is strong, the characters feel believable, and while the action occasionally stretches credibility, it's generally well-executed and entertaining. Ultimately, The Convert is a good production with some flaws, and I would recommend checking it out.
