Going into "The Convent," my first impression was negative: another period piece – something I usually avoid – and likely just another poorly made religious horror movie. However, within the first ten minutes, I found myself completely engrossed, unable to look away. The film’s atmosphere really swept me along. The performances were excellent, as was Paul Hyett's direction. The music fit perfectly, and the costumes looked great too. But what stood out most for me were the special effects. Yes, CGI was noticeable, which might bother some viewers, but I found it to be a big plus. Those glowing eyes made the film really striking, so I honestly can’t find anything wrong with it. If you've read my reviews before, you know that I usually try to highlight any flaws without holding back. But I thoroughly enjoyed "The Convent" from beginning to end. This is what "The Nun" should have been like! I noticed the film has a fairly low overall rating. Perhaps this movie resonated with me on a personal level, but why would I go along with popular opinion? I never have. I often dislike well-regarded films, prefer remakes, and don’t worry about having unusual taste in movies. Seriously, give this one a look; it really deserves more recognition.
