The paranormal investigators, "Ed Warren" (played by Patrick Wilson) and his wife "Lorraine" (Vera Farmiga), are called upon to help the desperate "Perron" family, who believe their isolated Rhode Island farmhouse is haunted. They quickly discover that the land itself has a history of Satanic rituals, and the spirits connected to it are hostile toward the family—particularly the five daughters, whose fear escalates throughout the ordeal. Director James Wan builds suspense in the narrative with an unsettling atmosphere, while Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor portray convincingly frightened parents as their dream home descends into a terrifying situation that may not be fixable even through religious rites. Joseph Bishara’s music adds to the disturbing tone of events, and the visual effects—combining stunts and prosthetics—all work together to generate a palpable sense of dread; surprisingly for many films in this category, there's also an element of believability present. Seeing it on a large screen, especially with an audience, is preferable and makes it worthwhile.
