It’s surprising this film earned an "R" rating, because genuinely frightening moments in movies seem scarce these days. Many horror films haven’t been truly terrifying anyway, and very few have managed to create the lasting dread that *The Exorcist* did. However, *The Conjuring 2* seems designed for broader appeal, opting for less intense scares suitable for a PG audience. There's promise in the film, but it feels like the director is hesitant, constantly backing away from anything more unsettling than a sudden loud noise. A psychologically compelling horror story could have been told here, yet that opportunity isn’t realized. Ultimately, as with most recent horror releases, it appears unwilling to truly scare its viewers. Despite this, it's preferable to the extreme violence found in other films currently available.
