This film holds a special place for me, stemming from childhood viewings as part of the "Friday Western" lineup on BBC2. Wayne portrays a Texas ranger who joins forces with the sophisticated and completely unreliable gunslinger “Regret” (Whitman) to confront a group of heavily armed outlaws. Someone is supplying weapons to the Comanches, who are then raiding alongside some unpleasant individuals operating from somewhere in the desert. "Jake" (Wayne) and his hesitant companion manage to seize an identifying banner from the Native Americans and, equipped with a wagon full of rifles – lacking firing pins, naturally – set off to locate the source of the arms. Upon reaching a large estate nestled within a sheltered valley, they meet “Gralle” (Persoff), the mastermind behind everything who is confined to a wheelchair, his daughter "Pilar" (Balin), and their primary enforcer "Amelung" (Ankara), hoping to pose as potential vendors. The situation becomes complicated when she recognizes "Jake" from an earlier encounter where he was wearing his badge; however, she also seems drawn to “Regret,” leaving the question of whether she’ll betray them to her father or be swayed by her feelings. I felt that the unexpected pairing of Wayne and Whitman functioned effectively, with Whitman providing a strong contrast to Wayne's familiar persona. There's a good amount of action, particularly near the end, and the scenery is beautifully captured, showcasing the Utah locations used for the film and giving a sense of vastness to the story of these gun runners and those pursuing them. Lee Marvin contributes some personality during his appearance as “Crow,” Patrick Wayne offers some visual appeal, and Jack Elam appears as "Horseface," providing his characteristic mix of wild, somewhat comical threat, though he doesn't get enough screen time. It’s a well-made adventure film that I found quite entertaining.
