John Chard on The Colditz Story

8/10 · Nov 14, 2015

Guy Hamilton takes on directing duties and helps craft the screenplay alongside Ivan Foxwell, drawing from P.R. Reid’s novel. The movie recounts a narrative rooted in true events, featuring performances by John Mills, Lionel Jeffries, Bryan Forbes, Anton Diffring, Richard Wattis, Ian Carmichael, and Eric Portman. Francis Chagrin handled the musical score, while Gordon Dines was responsible for the cinematography. The film centers on the various escape attempts made by Allied prisoners at Colditz Castle. It portrays their misfortunes, the connections they developed with one another, the daily routines of prison life, and ultimately leads to a recreation of historical events. The filmmakers have created a well-paced narrative, successfully incorporating moments of suspense alongside lighter comedic elements. This gives the film a sense of British stoicism, portraying the characters as heroic in their situation—a genuinely uplifting portrayal. With strong performances from a recognizable group of actors, this enjoyable movie recalls a period of classic British filmmaking while also paying tribute to the Allied soldiers who found themselves prisoners of war. It earns a rating of 8/10.
