I’ve seen numerous portrayals and fictionalized stories about mountain climbing journeys, but this one stands out as particularly unusual. It feels that way because the film attempts to blend several different styles. There's an element of suspense, a historical look at Chinese expeditions in the Himalayas, a romantic storyline, and some noticeable propaganda mixed in. At various points, there just felt like too much going on. The thriller sequences resembled a standard Hollywood production, featuring improbable rescues and dramatic moments that seemed far beyond what climbers would actually encounter—some were so exaggerated I almost anticipated seeing a superhero’s cape blowing in the strong winds. Similarly, the romantic aspects occasionally appeared excessive, bordering on melodrama. Achieving any kind of happiness felt more difficult than reaching the summit of Everest. Still, I did finish watching it, staying engaged because the visual effects seemed well-done, even if they didn't quite mesh together seamlessly, and I could recognize the limitations the Chinese director faced in creating this film celebrating national pride.
