This is a delightful, entertaining movie from the nineteen forties centering on how feelings that aren’t returned can lead someone down a path of self-centeredness, destructive behavior, and even violence. It’s hard to fault something with Boris Karloff in it, especially considering his performances during this period. Those who appreciate opera will likely find it particularly pleasing. Director Waggner, best known for 'The Wolf Man,' proves himself capable here, although later in life he primarily worked on television shows like the nineteen sixties ‘Batman.’ Being Karloff's initial film in color (and certainly in Technicolor), it’s also noted for utilizing the same sets as 'The Phantom of the Opera', which came out the year before—these are the oldest movie sets still around. I discovered this while looking at a really good collection containing five thrillers that all feature Karloff from the late thirties and early forties. Both the set itself and this film deserve strong recommendations to anyone who likes his movies.
