A young woman named Alicianne Del Mar takes a job as a baby-sitter for Rosalie Nordon, a girl grieving her mother’s recent death. On her way to the Nordon home, Alicianne experiences car trouble and is helped by Mrs. Whitfield, an older local resident. Mrs. Whitfield warns Alicianne about the Nordons, expressing dislike for them and suggesting that young Rosalie is responsible for misfortunes in the nearby woods; however, the new sitter dismisses these concerns, attributing the girl’s behavior to her loss. Upon arrival, Mr. Nordon isn't particularly welcoming, but his older son, Len, apologizes for his father’s demeanor. Surprisingly, Rosalie seems pleased with Alicianne’s presence and they quickly form a bond. Despite being unsociable and engaging in odd activities like nighttime walks through the cemetery, Rosalie often acts cynically, disrespectfully toward her father, and openly defies him. Eventually, Alicianne finds herself targeted by Rosalie, even receiving threats. The situation escalates to the point where Alicianne realizes Mrs. Whitfield’s warnings were accurate – Rosalie is not an ordinary child. Discovering the truth, she joins forces with Rosalie's brother to escape from the house before it's too late. Despite its flaws, "The Child" creates a dark and unsettling mood. The film locations—the woods and the large house—are eerie and contribute to a sense of isolation and gloominess. While not inherently depressing, these settings combined with the characters create a palpable feeling of despair. Rosalie’s character is particularly disturbing, and her relationship with her father stands out as what makes "The Child" so unique. It's unfortunate that Rosalie isn't more widely recognized given the many horror films featuring evil children; it may be due to limited distribution. I personally find Rosalie a memorable horror figure, having seen quite a few horror movies over the years. If you don’t expect perfection and can overlook the less impressive special effects and acting, "The Child" might appeal to you. My biggest issue is that the film doesn't explore Rosalie’s deceased mother enough; this information seems essential to understanding the story. Her disturbing behavior appears to be hereditary, but the glimpses into her background felt insufficient. More details about her would have made the movie significantly better. Aside from that, "The Child" is an enjoyable film and I recommend it to horror fans who don't always demand a high level of production value.
