Most people’s appreciation feels like they’re hoping for something extra later on. The Cheaters, sometimes called The Castaway, isn’t a Christmas movie that many younger viewers will be familiar with. Maybe it's because Republic Pictures made it on a small budget? Whatever the reason, it’s just been overlooked. You won’t find it appearing on any of those lists of Christmas films that pop up every year. The story was written by Frances Hyland and Albert Ray, and it centers around an elegant family who invite a struggling actor to their house for Christmas. As the film unfolds, we discover this family is trying to get their hands on a wealthy relative’s inheritance, but predictably things don't go smoothly. Joseph Schildkraut (from The Shop Around the Corner), Billie Burke (The Wizard of Oz), and Eugene Pallette are among the actors in the cast. Joseph Kane directed it, while Reggie Lanning handled the photography and Walter Scharf did the music. But what about the quality? If you’re searching for another classic Christmas movie to get into the holiday spirit, this is one you can definitely add to your list. It's similar to The Bishop's Wife, which isn't a bad comparison at all. My biggest complaint with the film is that it gives the impression of being something more than it turns out to be. Around halfway through, it seems like anything could happen; there’s even a suggestion it might become darker and have an unexpected conclusion. But, and I wasn't necessarily hoping for something as bleak as Pottersville, the movie goes back to what's expected, opting for a cozy feeling of mince pies and warm spiced wine. Again, that works well for the time of year we watch it, but honestly, it felt like it could have been more ambitious. Even so, I’d happily suggest this one if you’re looking for something comforting. 6/10
