Fannie Ward’s first appearance in films comes with this movie as "Edith," who seems more interested in frivolous things than anything else, and she’s married to Jack Dean ("Richard"), a broker. She enjoys the finer aspects of life, but when he expresses concern about how much money she spends on unnecessary items, she decides to get some funds herself by taking $10,000 from a charity she oversees. Hoping to pay it back, she finds help from "Hishiru Tori" (Sessue Hayakawa), an ivory dealer with questionable connections, who proposes a solution – but demands something significant in return. The film has a very stage-like feel, which isn’t necessarily negative; it allows you to concentrate on the people involved—especially Ward and the unsettling “Tori”—who both contribute to the shadowy, almost threatening atmosphere of the movie. The way light and darkness are employed also enhances that feeling, though the conclusion does lean into excessive drama. Still, this story about greed and regret is definitely worth watching for about an hour.
