Robert Cummings was among the more dependable performers in lower-budget films. He possessed good looks and demonstrated an ability to portray characters who were intense, brooding, or impressive; his performances were consistently acceptable, and he does what he can with this rather improbable story. Playing "Chuck Scott," he’s brought on board as a driver for mobster "Roman" (Steve Cochran), but develops feelings for Roman's dissatisfied wife Michèle Morgan (Lorna). Soon they’ve fled to Cuba, headed toward South America. "Roman" and his associate "Gino" (Peter Lorre) are angered by this act of defiance, and the couple’s journey stalls in Havana when "Scott" unexpectedly returns home with an army friend, "Davidson" (Jack Holt), making the entire episode seem like a dream—one that isn't finished. The beginning is quite energetic, featuring a noteworthy depiction of backseat driving; however, it loses momentum during a lengthy and sentimental stretch before regaining strength. Ultimately, I found the ending to be rather silly and disappointing. Cornell Woolrich’s original novel incorporates psychological aspects which provide a good basis for what could have been a strong and reasonably effective thriller at times, and there are some fairly inventive visual effects that contribute to the feeling of disorientation. It's unfortunate that the lackluster writing and uninspired performances from the supporting cast—even Lorre—prevented it from reaching its full potential. A shame; it had an appealing premise.
