George C. Scott portrays a composer who is dealing with loss and takes up residence in an empty Seattle mansion that had been vacant for twelve years. He develops a connection with the Historical Society representative who arranged the rental (Trish Van Devere). However, the house has a disturbing past, and unsettling events begin to occur. "The Changeling," released in 1980, falls into the haunted house horror genre alongside films like "The Legend of Hell House," "The Evil," and "The Amityville Horror." It doesn’t quite reach the level of “Amityville Horror,” but it's comparable to "Legend of Hell House" and “The Evil” and would later have an impact on other supernatural movies, such as "The Ring." Russell Hunter, who wrote the novel and also contributed to the screenplay, stated that the story was inspired by his own experiences while living in the Henry Treat Rogers mansion in Denver's Cheesman Park neighborhood during the late 1960s. Personally, I felt the script gave the ghost too much ability later on, which led to a feeling of disbelief instead of genuine fear. An instance of this is when the house is shown being set ablaze seemingly at will. It just seemed unbelievable. It’s worth noting that Trish was married to George C. Scott from 1972 until his death in 1999. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes and filming took place in Vancouver, Seattle, New York City (Lincoln Center), and one scene was shot in Toronto. GRADE: B-/C+
