The Cellar feels like a throwback to older horror films, and for the most part, it succeeds. It began with what seemed like a fairly standard haunted house setup, complete with predictable music, but quickly proved to be more complex than initially apparent. The movie offers some interesting variations on familiar horror elements, creates an unsettling mood, and features legitimately frightening moments that don't depend solely on sudden loud noises. Everyone in the cast performs well, though I particularly want to acknowledge Tara Lee’s work during the scene involving the staircase leading down to the cellar; she managed to make a straightforward moment incredibly suspenseful through her acting. The way the story unfolded was very effective, and the resolution itself was satisfying too. My only real complaint is that the conclusion could have provided a little more insight into what had occurred and why. The character of the previous homeowner felt underdeveloped and didn't contribute as much to the narrative as I’d wanted. I would certainly suggest this film to anyone who enjoys horror movies; I found it thoroughly engaging.
