This drama, featuring Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine, depicts a couple struggling with conflicting desires for their daughter's wedding—balancing personal ambitions against financial constraints and social expectations. The younger pair, Jane (Debbie Reynolds) and Ralph (Rod Taylor), initially hope for a modest ceremony to avoid complications and expenses. However, when his father presents an apartment offer and her neighbors question the perceived rush of the event, Davis’ character, Aggie, persuades her financially cautious husband, Tom (Borgnine), that they should plan an extravagant celebration. The narrative includes humorous moments alongside heartfelt scenes and memorable supporting performances from Barry Fitzgerald as Uncle Jack and Ray Stricklyn as Eddie, the brother going off to the army. The film progresses briskly. Davis embodies the image of a dispirited homemaker, while Borgnine is excellent portraying the weary cab driver who has diligently saved money to launch his own business—and the children effectively communicate the anxieties and pressures surrounding this significant occasion, potentially deterring anyone facing their own wedding day. It’s thoroughly enjoyable viewing.
