The film tells an interesting tale of a 17th-century spirit (played by Charles Laughton) who finds himself bound to his family’s castle, needing to perform a courageous act to break the spell that holds him. The narrative takes a turn when American soldiers are stationed at the castle during World War II, and it's revealed that one of them, "Cuffy" (Robert Young), is a relative who might be able to assist in freeing him from his otherworldly confinement. It moves along at a decent clip as a ghost story, and features moments of humor sprinkled throughout, although Margaret O’Brien’s portrayal of the young “Lady Jessica” proves somewhat distracting. Laughton, Young, and Una O'Connor all deliver strong performances, and while it doesn't elicit constant laughter, it remains an enjoyable family adventure.
