John Chard on The Canterville Ghost

7/10 · Sep 6, 2014

A pleasant and harmless diversion. The story concerns Sir Simon of Canterville, who finds himself compelled to fight a duel on behalf of a relative. Recognizing that he’s facing certain defeat, he runs away in disgrace. His father, deeply upset by this dishonor, imprisons Simon within the castle walls without sustenance until he dies. As a consequence, Simon is condemned to remain as a ghost at Canterville Castle, awaiting the moment when another family member performs an act of valor that will erase the mark of cowardice on the Canterville name. That doesn't suggest it's meant to be humorous, does it? Yet, it is, and quite agreeable too. Drawing inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s story with the same title, The Canterville Ghost features appealing portrayals by Charles Laughton as Simon and a young Margaret O'Brien as Lady Jessica de Canterville. Laughton seems to be having a good time playing the ghost, leaning into melodramatic expressions while also delivering comedic moments—it's a genuinely entertaining performance. O’Brien clearly enjoys being in the spotlight, bringing youthful energy that brightens every scene she appears in. The narrative adheres to a familiar structure leading to a satisfying conclusion, but it remains an enjoyable experience nonetheless. The film gains momentum when a group of American soldiers are stationed at the castle and Cuffy Williams (Robert Young) is introduced; he’s also a Canterville descendant, though he seems prone to cowardice, raising questions about whether he can demonstrate bravery and release Simon from his spectral obligations. 7/10
