Wuchak on The Canterville Ghost

7/10 · Apr 30, 2024

A diverting, eerie story unfolds in the English countryside, featuring Patrick Stewart and Neve Campbell. An American family relocates to a sprawling estate situated just outside of London, where the teenage daughter (Campbell) senses a spectral figure (Stewart) while also developing a relationship with a young nobleman (Daniel Betts). "The Canterville Ghost," a television movie from 1996, adapts Oscar Wilde’s comedic short story originally published in 1887. It stands out as one of the more accurate film versions—there have been many—by bringing the narrative into contemporary times and removing the oldest son, Washington. Virginia's age is also adjusted to around 18 instead of 15. It’s a pleasant family-oriented fantasy with unsettling elements reminiscent of “The Watcher in the Woods” (1980/2017). It would likely be classified as G or PG horror, and that’s perfectly acceptable if the narrative is strong. The film feels like a Nancy Drew adventure taking place at a manor house in Britain. Campbell was approximately 21 years old during filming, nearing 22, and performs adequately in her role as the clever main character; I found her performance agreeable but not particularly memorable. Stewart was also working steadily before his second “Star Trek: The Next Generation” film appearance. He portrays the ghost with a degree of empathy. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 32 minutes and was filmed at Knebworth House, which is situated 30 miles north of London. GRADE: B/B-
