CinemaSerf on The Canterville Ghost

It’s hard to imagine any adaptation topping Charles Laughton's 1944 film, but this version of Oscar Wilde's short story manages to be enjoyable enough. The narrative follows an American family who move into "Canterville Chase," a grand and unsettling old house with a reputation for being haunted by a frightening ghost. This Otis family has three children, and after encountering some strange occurrences, they aren’t scared of the specter—in fact, they begin to look for ways to help “Sir Simon” break the curse that's kept him in a sort of suspended state for around three hundred years, and also reunite him with his lost love before death claims him. The animation is serviceable, and there are numerous lighthearted moments; however, the story feels drawn out, with an excess of dialogue. I think it functions better when portrayed by live actors because animation doesn't provide enough constraints on the ghostly elements, occasionally making it resemble something like "Scooby Doo." It might seem silly to say, but it just lacks a certain authenticity for my taste. Nevertheless, it’s good that this story is still being shared—it's an amusing romance that has endured remarkably well.
