The comedic bits from the drivers occasionally elicit a chuckle, but ultimately the film fails to ignite as Burt Reynolds’ signature playful charisma seems to be working overtime to stay afloat. He and his companion "Victor" (Dom DeLuise) are set on being victorious in the race—a notorious and unlawful cross-country event—and devise a plan to take over an ambulance so they can use its emergency lights to speed across the nation. It seemed like a good idea at the time, apparently. They aren't alone in their ambition; Roger Moore is also scheming with his own Aston Martin – yes, that very car – while two priests driving a red Ferrari (Sammy Davis Jr. & Dean Martin) try to “bless” their way toward victory. The cast includes Peter Fonda, a briefly appearing Jackie Chan, and Farah Fawcett, alongside memorable performances from the perpetually spaced-out doctor "Van Helsing" - Jack Elam. However, the narrative loses steam, resembling a live-action adaptation of "Wacky Races," sprinkled with some suggestive humor reminiscent of the “Carry On” films. The performers associated with the "Rat Pack" appear to be present solely for payment, and Fawcett contributes little beyond her characteristic attractiveness as a woman who isn’t truly in peril. It doesn't measure up to "Smokey and the Bandit" (1977), although there are some clear parallels in terms of provoking law enforcement, and it largely peters out by the conclusion. There are enjoyable parts, but not nearly enough of them, until the collection of mistakes plays after the credits.
