"The Calm Beyond" tells a story that's interesting but doesn’t quite live up to its potential, concerning survival and personal development. The movie unfolds within the confined space of a mostly submerged Hong Kong apartment building following a catastrophic tsunami which erased everything familiar for the main character. This young woman exists in a state of constant vigilance, trying to minimize her impact on the world so as not to be noticed by groups who occasionally raid the apartments from boats. She carries with her memories of what came before—aspirations and frequently, disappointments—and these are shown through flashbacks. Essentially, it’s an existence devoid of real living until a young girl appears, offering the possibility of a brighter, more courageous, and ultimately more complete future. It's a meaningful story, thoughtfully written in a way that feels grounded in realistic struggles and believable reactions to such circumstances. However, the connection between the two central characters doesn’t fully materialize; it always seems somewhat superficial. The profound relationship one might anticipate given their situation never truly develops. This leaves the viewer with a serviceable film featuring good acting and a solid plot, but one that ultimately feels incomplete. Overall, there's much to appreciate here, which would have been even stronger had there been greater attention paid to exploring the emotional connection between the woman and the girl. It’s still worth seeing though.
