Carrey and Stiller deliver a darkly comedic film. Like everything else, the internet has both positive and negative aspects. With The Cable Guy, I want to acknowledge the online community, especially those on IMDb, who have championed this controversial movie. When it was first released, critics largely dismissed it, and many viewers who anticipated something along the lines of Mask or Ace Ventura were disappointed; some even considered it a setback for Carrey’s career. That turned out not to be the case. He would return to more mainstream fare the next year with "Liar Liar," and he continued to surprise people with his role selections and performances in films like "The Truman Show," “Man On The Moon,” and "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.” Looking at Carrey's career as a whole, The Cable Guy represents a brave decision on his part, demonstrating his readiness and capacity for more demanding roles. The movie combines Carrey’s signature comedy with darker, almost horror-like elements. The themes of loneliness and the desire for connection clash somewhat with Carrey’s chaotic behavior as he interacts with Matthew Broderick's average character. However, director Ben Stiller, aside from a rushed ending, largely succeeds in blending these aspects together. He uses Carrey’s energy to create both comic moments and an underlying sense of desperation and craziness. Throughout the film, before it takes a darker turn, there are some genuinely funny scenes. The Karaoke sequence and the dinner at Medieval Times are particularly memorable, but the clever references to movies and the television-obsessed world also provide enjoyable and insightful humor. It’s not flawless, but it was released at an unfortunate time or perhaps simply misunderstood by critics back then. Fortunately, the internet allows us to find people who will admit they enjoy a lot about The Cable Guy. I am one of those individuals as well. 7/10
