A collaboration between MGM, the Weinstein brothers, and Corky Burger resulted in this underwhelming and unoriginal horror film centered around fraternities. "Cropsy," an initially unpleasant caretaker at a lakeside retreat, becomes the target of a harsh prank by some privileged, young people. Some time passes, and now bearing significant scars and considerable resentment, he seeks payback on those responsible for his injuries. Simultaneously, a fresh group of teenagers preoccupied with sex arrives at a neighboring camp, where "Todd" (Brian Matthews) attempts to prevent them from harming, exploiting, or engaging in inappropriate behavior with each other—though they soon discover that peeping Toms and troublemakers are not their primary concern. It's not entirely awful; the film simply suffers from poor writing, commonplace conversations, and predictable characters who seemed deserving of whatever "Cropsy" dished out. The woodland setting does contribute a subtle sense of dread, and the handheld camera work is occasionally successful as these rather shallow American women confront their ultimate peril. It appeared acceptable when viewed on a large screen recently, but it might be even more enjoyable with some drinks and a storm brewing while watching it on television in October.
