Filmed in the summer of 1988, this movie seemed to benefit from Tom Hanks’ rising star power following films like “Splash” and “Big.” He was young then, and audiences turned out for it. It's an entertaining film portraying a typical American neighborhood confronting unusual neighbors and grown men behaving childishly. A new family moves into the neglected house nearby, but they maintain a distance and seem to only appear after dark. The cast includes familiar faces like Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Rick Ducommun, Corey Feldman, Wendy Schaal, and Henry Gibson. Though it shares some similarities with “The Munsters” and “The Addams Family,” you won’t find the exaggerated humor seen in the director's "Gremlins," at least until the final scenes. The focus is on the unfolding events as the neighbors try to figure out who these odd newcomers are. Ricky’s girlfriend, portrayed by Heather Haase, offers a small but pleasant distraction, though her character isn’t utilized enough. Ultimately, it's an agreeable film that doesn’t leave much of an impression, and I found it to be fairly disposable entertainment. The runtime is 1 hour, 41 minutes, and filming took place at Universal Studios on the Colonial Street backlot set. GRADE: B-
