This film shares some similarities with the "Mr. Chips" narrative, presenting an adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s tale set within a formerly distinguished English school. Michael Redgrave portrays “Crocker-Harris,” who has been diligently and rather coldly attempting to teach Greek to largely unenthusiastic students for years, and is now nearing retirement due to illness. It becomes apparent early on that his wife, "Millie" (Jean Kent, in good form), holds little regard for her unremarkable husband, and seems to have developed a closeness with his somewhat oily colleague, “Hunter” (Nigel Patrick). As his departure draws nearer, the teacher begins to connect with the intelligent and refreshingly candid young "Taplow" (Brian Smith), who not only shows an interest in Aristotle but also demonstrates concern for this now rather disheartened educator. It's also clear that his fellow teachers aren’t particularly supportive of him—a point well illustrated by headmaster “Frobisher’s” (Wilfred Hyde-White) lack of compassion regarding their financial difficulties. Redgrave delivers a powerful and layered performance; his character has drifted along without purpose for so long, he's lost touch with how to live or what he himself desired when he was the age of the young man now stirring up a dormant sense of value within him. His recognition of his marital situation, and the sharpness of his wife’s tongue, feels like a sudden awakening after years of passively accepting it. I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the ending—it felt perhaps too abrupt a change of heart from nearly everyone involved, but overall it's an intriguing exploration of character with occasional moments of humor and a compelling narrative.
