I went into this film really looking forward to seeing what Maggie Gyllenhaal could do as a director. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale are both fantastic performers, however, even their talents weren't enough to make 'The Bride' work. There were times when I was hoping that Buckley’s character would settle on one way of being, because it felt like she was constantly changing. This bothered me more than anything else regarding the story's flow and how engaging it was. Bale’s portrayal of 'The Monster' was as subtle as I had wanted, and you could really sense his desire for connection with other people. Buckley moving between an American and a British accent seemed strange to me, but I did enjoy it because she’s so good at accents—American, Russian, whatever. It was obvious that the director had a plan, but unfortunately Ms. Gyllenhaal didn't quite hit the mark; she might have realized what she wanted, but it wasn't something that would appeal to moviegoers, myself among them.
