John Garfield portrays "Harry Morgan," a boat captain whose livelihood is failing as he tries to run tourist excursions and fishing trips while burdened by significant debt. He’s struggling alongside his friend, "Wes" (Juano Hernandez), and facing constant urging from his wife, "Lucy" (Phyllis Thaxter), who wants him to accept a stable position working on her uncle's lettuce farm. The narrative then follows a foreseeable path as the pair finds itself marooned in Mexico, with only one apparent option for returning home. This opportunity comes through “Duncan” (Wallace Ford), an unscrupulous lawyer who proposes to help them escape if they’ll agree to smuggle something across the border. Harry's decisions begin to affect those around him, and his marriage is strained further by his association with "Leona" (Patricia Neal), a woman who seems unimpressed with men in general. Director Michael Curtiz manages to fit a considerable amount into this ninety-minute adventure thriller, and Garfield and Neal share a palpable chemistry that adds energy to their scenes as Harry becomes increasingly overwhelmed. The dialogue, adapted from the Hemmingway story, is rapid and sharp, and the harsh storyline has substance with a well-managed pace leading up to a tense final sequence!
