The film centers on Parvana, an eleven-year-old girl who must rely on her cleverness to ensure her family’s survival after her father's arrest and imprisonment by the Taliban in Afghanistan. A significant challenge she faces is the restriction placed upon girls – they are not permitted to leave their homes without a male escort, let alone earn money working outdoors. To cope with this, Parvana cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy so she can tell imaginative stories of mystery and romance to passersby in hopes of earning some income. She finds herself needing to balance the need for money with avoiding detection by those enforcing the rules while also devising a way to secure her father’s release. It's an excellent animated film that delivers a powerful narrative featuring a captivating protagonist, who inspires compassion but also showcases resilience as her resourcefulness is repeatedly challenged by this restrictive regime; she simply won’t give up. The artwork has a lovely quality and the musical score complements the story well, creating a genuinely pleasant experience about determination, love, and faithfulness.
