After being pulled from the water by a fishing vessel and having medical treatment for wounds in his back, Matt Damon’s character sets out to discover what occurred. The problem is that he doesn't know his own identity. Fortunately, the person who saved him possesses surgical expertise; along with removing the bullets, they extract a device containing information about a Swiss bank account—a detail that provides a name but raises even more questions. A visit to the US embassy proves unsuccessful, and during his escape, he joins forces with "Marie," portrayed by Franka Potente. Together, they must outrun both law enforcement and potential killers while attempting to unravel the enigma of “Treadstone.” The film is an exciting spy story from beginning to end, featuring brief, carefully choreographed action sequences that create a real sense of danger and tension. Robert Ludlum’s narrative remains mostly faithful to the source material, and Damon, along with a convincingly deceptive performance by Brian Cox, are both excellent.
