It’s invariably difficult to improve upon a classic tale already captured on film, like the 1935 version, and a successful remake is rare. However, Roger Donaldson has come remarkably close – certainly surpassing the 1962 adaptation – with this well-acted account of mutiny and harshness. The narrative unfolds as a recollection, framed by Lord Hood’s (played by Lord Olivier) inquiry into events aboard the doomed ship. Anthony Hopkins portrays Lt. Bligh, a strict officer in command of the "HMS Bounty," essentially a cargo vessel tasked with transporting breadfruit trees to Tahiti for use in feeding enslaved people within the West Indies colonies. Mel Gibson delivers an adequate performance as Fletcher Christian, his reasonable second-in-command. As events unfold, the film deliberately explores the gradual deterioration of their bond, stemming from Bligh’s lack of compassion toward the crew. Following numerous hardships, their relationship is severely strained upon reaching Tahiti, and it becomes clear that disaster looms. This "Bounty" installment dedicates more screen time to depicting the arduous and dangerous open-boat voyage endured by those cast adrift – showcasing the ocean's perils, encounters with cannibals, and dwindling supplies – a sequence Hopkins anchors effectively. While he may have been an unfeeling person, he was undeniably a skilled seaman. The film’s visuals are outstanding, enhanced by Vangelis’ musical score and Robert Bolt’s adaptation of the story, which maintains concise and impactful dialogue—particularly from Hopkins. It doesn't quite reach the heights of Laughton and Gable's performances, but then again...
