I’ve seen other movies based on Stephen King's *Boogeyman* novel, and this one is definitely the most underwhelming. The main problem has to do with how the story—about a frightening being that might be hiding in every closet—is handled. It spends too much time dissecting the family’s problems, getting bogged down in an almost unsettling level of detail about their dysfunction. It's not surprising that families going through grief have difficulties; stating this so plainly overshadows the horror elements. Because of this, the film becomes overly bleak and disheartening to a fault. The outcome is a predictable and not particularly fun experience, leaving me feeling drained and let down. Ultimately, the excessively gloomy and sorrowful approach takes away any sense of optimism that's essential for even an average horror movie.
