Denzel Washington—it’s hard to believe he was once that captivating, isn't it? He essentially rescued "Malcolm X" from becoming just another misfire for Spike Lee. His portrayal of the most despicable villain imaginable in "Training Day" resulted in one of the finest performances I’ve ever witnessed. Now, though, he seems content to play “the intelligent officer.” In “Fallen,” he was that same character facing supernatural forces; here, he's the smart cop who is also physically limited. It feels like he’ll be repeating this formula repeatedly from now on. These performances are starting to blend together, making you think about what happened to that exceptional actor buried beneath all these police roles. As a mystery or thriller, it's not terrible; however, the experience leaves you pondering how many better films could have been made if he’d chosen different parts. The ability is still present—you can sense it wanting to surface—but seeing Washington in this type of role so frequently diminishes any enjoyment. Please return to acting, Denzel; we want to see that again.
