Belén Rueda portrays Mayka, a woman whose marriage to her younger chemist husband, Álex (Hugo Silva), isn't particularly joyful. She frequently provokes him and hints at divorce proceedings that would leave him financially ruined. Unexpectedly, she suffers a heart attack and finds herself on a mortuary table—though not for long. Before an autopsy can be performed, she disappears. Jose Coronado plays policeman Jaime, who views the husband with suspicion regarding his possible selfish intentions, but lacks concrete evidence due to the absence of a body. A near-constant thunderstorm provides a backdrop as we follow a cleverly constructed game of pursuit where it’s not always easy to discern who is chasing whom. The narrative offers fragments of information, misleading clues, and distractions, all presented with enthusiasm by director Oriol Paula, keeping us intrigued and doubtful from beginning to end. Is the situation perhaps more straightforward than it initially appears? The suspense is skillfully maintained; unlike many similar stories where the outcome is foreseeable, this one genuinely keeps you guessing until a resolution that combines elements of Agatha Christie and “The Sting.” The film utilizes dark and damp settings effectively (it seems no one desires illumination), and Coronado’s meticulousness, Rueda’s unpleasantness, and Silva’s self-satisfaction all contribute to the atmosphere. Flashbacks alongside the real-time investigation help clarify some of the many gaps, aided by a touch of dubious science. This is a genuine thriller.
