Omar Sharif, playing Ahmed, goes back to his Egyptian hometown with the goal of assisting the farmers there in improving their circumstances. This plan is unwelcome to the local Pasha, Zaki Rustum, who then begins working against their efforts to cultivate and gather a sugar cane crop. The story that unfolds combines elements of romance and suspense as Faten Hamamah, the Pasha’s daughter—who is strikingly beautiful—returns after eight years and starts reviving childhood affections for the main character; at the same time, she finds herself increasingly involved in a worsening situation. This crisis escalates further when a local Sheikh, believed to be responsible for ruining the crop, turns up dead. It's not hard to understand why Sharif was recruited by Hollywood—he’s an attractive man with undeniable charm, and his performances have a genuine feel, particularly his scenes alongside Hamamah. The film falters somewhat at the conclusion; it seemed like the narrative lost momentum. However, impressive location photography and brisk direction from Youssef Chahine with a limited number of actors make this production worthwhile.
