Despite a few brief bright spots, *’The Blackening'* doesn't offer much to engage with. It’s fortunate that the filmmakers kept the movie under 90 minutes; otherwise, it would have felt like an even bigger slog. Even so, there isn't enough here to really hold your attention. The comedy is arguably its best feature—though it’s not particularly hilarious—some of the conversations (which were reportedly improvised) elicit a chuckle now and then. The villains aren't very compelling, and the plot twist lacks any real surprise. However, the actors do a decent job overall. Jermaine Fowler delivers a dependable performance, and X Mayo was easily my favorite to watch. The incorporation of a board game is an interesting idea—similar to *’Jumanji’*, but with racist themes. Rumors suggest a sequel might be in development. Let's hope it will be better than this unfortunately unremarkable film.
