While it doesn't quite reach the visual heights of its predecessor, this film offers a more exciting story. The plot involves Berbers traveling to New York City to retrieve their champion stallion, and Alec (played by Kelly Reno) follows them into the Moroccan—and potentially Algerian—desert landscape. Vincent Spano portrays Alec’s guide from Morocco. I personally prefer "The Black Stallion Returns" (1983) over the original; it lacks some artistic flair but is a more gripping narrative and undeniably more adventurous. It has similarities to “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), though with a focus on a boy and his horse, and unfolds at a quicker tempo. It’s true that this movie isn't as grand or polished as "Lawrence," but it delivers exactly what you want if you’re seeking an adventure set in the Sahara geared toward younger audiences. The sequence involving a stowaway is handled effectively, and I was glad to see Jodi Thelen, with her dark hair, included. Some people have issues with how the story concludes, but I think it works well within the context of everything else. The film’s running time is 1 hour, 43 minutes, and filming locations include New York City, Djanet, Morocco, Algeria, Abiquiu, New Mexico, Italy, Santa Clarita & Los Angeles. GRADE: B-
