Douglas Fairbanks remains exceptionally skilled, portraying the title character—though his origins are somewhat unexpected. Following a pirate assault on their vessel where his father dies, he resolves to get revenge on these criminals by joining them and working his way up. Things proceed according to plan until they seize Princess "Isobel" (Billie Dove), who quickly captures his attention, requiring him to protect her from the pirates’ lewd and occasionally brutal behavior. The film incorporates nearly every pirate adventure trope imaginable—including walking the plank, hidden riches, deceptive schemes—and an abundance of action and spectacle. Albert Parker maintains a brisk tempo, featuring a wonderfully unpleasant performance by Sam de Grasse, an appearance by Donald Crisp ("MacTavish"), and John Wallace’s attempt at imitating "Long John Silver." The romantic element is interwoven naturally, adding a subtle depth to what is fundamentally a lavish pirate adventure with striking nautical photography, explosions, and visual flair.
