The initial appearance of “Maximilian,” that unsettling robot, brought back a memory of seeing “Godi” in "Island at the Top of the World." This 1979 Disney film has a much darker tone. The "Palomino" finds the lost spaceship "Cygnus" near a black hole and they go aboard. They then find out that the captain, portrayed with unsettling skill by Maximilian Schell ("Reinhardt"), and the robot are planning to guide their ship through this strange space distortion. However, it doesn't take long for the newcomers to realize something much more disturbing is happening, leading to a battle of intelligence as they and their own robots—who are considerably less threatening—attempt to escape unharmed. It’s not frequently seen these days, which is unfortunate because it demonstrates that Disney was capable of producing films geared toward older audiences, featuring impressive special effects, a smart story, and an ensemble cast – including Anthony Perkins, Joseph Bottoms, Ernest Borgnine, who all have substantial roles to play, and Roddy McDowall, clearly enjoying himself as the wisecracking robot "V. I. N. cent" armed with lasers.
