GenerationofSwine on The Black Dahlia

10/10 · Jan 13, 2023

I seem to be on my own with this one, but I enjoyed it. My fondness for films set in the past probably influenced my opinion, as this one takes place during a period that appeals to me. It does feature Scarlett Johansson, who is consistently engaging even when the material isn't top-notch. And Josh Hartnett is also present; I’m a fan of his work, particularly when he embodies a certain type of character reminiscent of William Holden—he often excels with voiceover narration. The plot doesn't involve him dying in a swimming pool right away, though Mia Kirshner does meet her end early on. She’s an actress who usually delivers strong performances despite not receiving enough recognition. Essentially, the film touches upon The Black Dahlia case in a nebulous way, explores a couple of police partners with something to hide in a hazy fashion, hints at a love triangle without clarity, and portrays the era somewhat indistinctly—and that’s likely why it didn't resonate with many viewers. It seemed to be about numerous things but never fully committed to any of them. Despite this, there was enough intrigue to keep me engaged, sufficient visual flair to make it enjoyable, and performances strong enough to feel authentic. It manages to entertain despite its flaws. Therefore, I’m giving it a perfect score; while the film has issues, it ultimately succeeds in what it sets out to do.
