Richard Greene portrays Richard Beckett, who journeys to the appropriately named castle of Count von Bruno—an Austrian nobleman with an eyepatch and portrayed by Stephen McNally in a deliberately over-the-top performance—to investigate the disappearance of two acquaintances. Upon his arrival, he becomes entangled in schemes involving his host and Elga, the count’s attractive wife (Rita Corday), leading to a contest of intelligence and a fight for their lives. Lon Chaney Jr. appears as Gargon, the count's not particularly bright assistant, while Boris Karloff makes memorable appearances as Dr. Meissen, the castle doctor with good intentions. This isn't really a horror movie; apart from an alligator-filled pool and some antique torture devices, there’s nothing of the sort—it’s simply a straightforward historical drama/romance that contrasts virtue and vice, featuring swordplay, traditional deceit, and a woman who is often in need of rescue. It may not be Nathan Juran's finest work, but it serves as an enjoyable adventure story to pass about ninety minutes.
