This movie brings together supernatural elements and the world of Hollywood fame, featuring Warner Oland as “Charlie Chan.” Dorothy Revier plays “Sheila Fayne,” an actress who is being courted by the affluent "Alan Jaynes," portrayed by William Post. Before agreeing to his advances, she seeks guidance from a psychic medium, "Tarneverro," brought to life by Bela Lugosi. Rather than a straightforward answer, he brings up the death of her former colleague, “Danny Mayo,” and suddenly “Chan” finds himself looking into a more recent killing. There are many potential suspects; some scenes are lit in a striking way, there's a touch of clever humor, and you get to see his family gathered around a dinner table that’s quite lavish – all of which contributes to the unfolding mystery. Lugosi is convincing as the questionable mystic, and Robert Young makes an appearance early on that’s worth noticing. The film is well-made in terms of direction and writing, and the suspense increases steadily. Oland brings a certain warmth to his role, delivering his characteristic sayings with a playful quality – something I found quite enjoyable.
