It's truly one of those Christmas movies that works no matter when you watch it, leaving you with a pleasant sense of contentment. David Niven portrays a Bishop attempting to persuade wealthy widow "Mrs. Hamilton" (Gladys Cooper) to finance a new cathedral – but not if it means having her deceased husband’s image included in the stained glass! Seeking direction through prayer, he receives an answer in the form of Cary Grant ("Dudley"), who resolutely and playfully aims to assist the Bishop with more than just his church project; specifically, helping him re-evaluate his priorities regarding his wife "Julia" (Loretta Young) and their daughter. The film is enriched by memorable appearances from Elsa Lanchester as their maid, James Gleason playing a skating cabbie, and Monty Woolley as the professor who always has a bottle at hand; it’s both entertaining and touching. There's something special about its overall tone – an atmosphere of generosity and thoughtfulness. Henry Koster directs with skill, drawing excellent performances from the entire ensemble cast as he leads the story to a fitting end for the season.
