People familiar with the frustrations of Scrabble understand the potential for conflict when one player has a valuable long word while the other is left with mostly vowels, suitable only for childish words! That dynamic plays out in this story as a couple engages in a game and he finds himself unable to make a move. While he turns on the television to pass the time, his partner, feeling restless, decides to vacuum the house. He becomes engrossed in watching someone sawing wood—yes, literally using a saw—and it quickly lulls him into a sleepy state, along with their dog. After experiencing some pleasant reveries about the past, he glances at her Scrabble letters but is discovered. She reacts angrily, forcing him to try and calm her down. Simultaneously, the television broadcasts news of an ongoing nuclear war and warns against smoking. It’s presented as a basic animation with exaggerated characters and a somewhat dreamlike quality, leading to an ending that I found quite satisfying.
