It's an enjoyable film, though I don’t imagine I’ll revisit it, but I can suggest it if you’re prepared for a medical crisis mixed with adventure. There are echoes of "A Fault in Our Stars" throughout much of the movie. I appreciate Kumail Nanjiani’s work, and I like Emily Gordon even more; truthfully, I was somewhat let down that she didn't have her own starring role, but I get why that wasn’t possible. Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano, and Holly Hunter all deliver strong performances—they all seemed very genuine in their portrayals. I realize Kumail is the central figure, and a significant part of the narrative centers on family dynamics, but (even though she spends much of it unconscious) Emily feels just as important to the story. That's what makes this film so impactful because it’s essentially a true account of two people merging their lives into one, and it feels incredibly intimate...very personal indeed. I suspect Kumail made the movie partly to avoid recounting the (rather lengthy) story in person, saying "Just go watch the movie." While much of what's shown seems straightforward, the writing is exceptionally well-suited to the material; the construction maintains a good rhythm across all the events unfolding. There are numerous losses and significant triumphs. Some humor is woven into the narrative, but it’s difficult to ignore the seriousness of Emily’s medical situation. It may be influencing me more because of what's happening in my life right now, but it's definitely present. This doesn't make for a particularly lighthearted experience. Emily, as did happen in reality, recovers, and Kumail now has a movie to remind her that he saved her life *eye roll*. The conclusion is very positive, and occasionally it’s good to see a historical event depicted on screen, but be mindful of the fact that this is largely what it is.
