If you don’t put a stop to this right now, it might be your last error in judgment. La resa dei conti (The Big Gundown) comes from director Sergio Sollima and was written by Sollima and Sergio Donati. The cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Tomas Milian, Walter Barnes, and Gerard Herter. Ennio Morricone composed the music, and Carlo Calini handled the cinematography. This is a fantastic Spaghetti Western with echoes of Zapata for added measure. The Big Gundown presents Van Cleef as Jonathan Corbett, a bounty hunter – and unofficial lawman – whose reputation for bringing in criminals, alive or dead, has attracted the attention of business magnate Brockston (Barnes). Hoping to enter politics, Brockston offers Corbett political assistance if he’ll take on a job. The task is to track down a Mexican man named Cuchillo (Milian), who allegedly raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl. As Corbett pursues Cuchillo across the landscape, the fugitive proves elusive, and Corbett begins to question the truthfulness of the accusations against him. Adios Amigo. What ingredients are necessary for an excellent Italo Western? A leading actor with undeniable charisma? Yes! A villain who can overact while still being likable? Absolutely! Sweeping desert scenery? You bet! A musical score that perfectly complements the story, almost becoming a character itself? Certainly! And violence? Of course! Sollima’s film has everything. A significant portion of the movie focuses on the pursuit and the evolving relationship between the two men. Cuchillo maintains his innocence and seems to have allies in every town they visit. Corbett is skilled with a gun, but he's not flawless; he can be outwitted and caught off guard. The screenplay demonstrates careful consideration in this regard, avoiding the trope of portraying the anti-hero as an unbeatable superman. There are also secondary storylines that reveal Sollima’s political perspective, even though the film isn’t overtly political. Themes of class conflict and racism surface, along with commentary on the justice system and those who manipulate it. With exciting action sequences driven by a sense of brooding masculinity, enhanced by the excellent work of Carlini and Morricone (it's one of Morricone's finest scores, truly explosive), this is top-tier Spaghetti Western filmmaking and highly recommended. 9/10
