The movie begins a bit awkwardly, though it develops into a decent children’s sports story—though fairly standard. It was about time Disney made a film centered on football/soccer for cinemas; the surge in popularity of the sport in the United States following the 1995 World Cup likely spurred this project. However, this isn't intended to be a serious depiction of the game; it’s not that kind of movie, and the actual sport itself is secondary—the focus is on people connecting with each other and demonstrating care. It’s quite pleasant. The cast doesn't have anyone particularly memorable, really. Olivia d'Abo (as Anna) and Steve Guttenberg (as Tom) are probably the most noticeable performers. Jessica Robertson’s portrayal of Kate has emotional depth, as does Anthony Esquivel’s Juan, but the actors aren’t given a lot to do with their roles. It’s admittedly unremarkable, but I did find *'The Big Green'* to be an agreeable experience.
