The film features a strong performance by Cornel Wilde portraying a detective focused on bringing down a local crime figure—played by Richard Conte—who has so far avoided conviction. Recognizing that his proximity to the situation has compromised his ability to remain impartial, his superior decides to shut down the investigation. However, the course of events shifts dramatically when Conte's associates unintentionally kill the woman instead of the detective, transforming the matter into a deeply personal vendetta. It's an effectively directed, brisk, and occasionally suspenseful crime drama written by Philip Yordan; trimming approximately ten minutes might have improved its overall pacing.
