Sayantan Chatterjee on The Big City

10/10 · Jul 9, 2018

The film earns a rating of 9.5 out of 10. As a result of an economic collapse common to India after it gained independence, Subrata (played by Anil Chatterjee) finds himself unemployed and forced to confront the difficulties of his circumstances, along with his anxieties as his wife Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee) takes on the role of primary provider for their household. Arati's experiences come across as deeply believable and intensely personal; the story moves from domestic frustrations to workplace dynamics, requiring her to become skilled at navigating both while interacting with people from different backgrounds and social strata, overcoming her initial reserve in how she looks and speaks. *The Big City (মহানগর)* prompts reflection on the pursuit of chances and the fleeting nature of advancement for everyone, regardless of their background or gender, amidst a busy urban environment filled with possibilities. Ray’s contribution holds considerable importance because he successfully makes the audience invested in this ordinary family through an uncomplicated story, conveying a profound sense of depth and detail while maintaining a lightness and ease in portraying societal change. It's genuinely a remarkable work. Milton Berle once said: "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door."
